Managing Type 2 Diabetes with a Low Carb Diet

Due to the consumption of oily foods ,fast foods and lack of exercise there are possibilities of increase in Type 2 diabetes among the people. It has been found by the diagnosis that people who are obese are more vulnerable to such disease. What they are now shocked to see is children and teenagers who have Type 2 diabetes. Because of their unhealthy lifestyle, more and more young people now have to change their habits and eating patterns to control this dangerous disease.

Many doctors do prescribe medicine for people with Type 2 diabetes if the situation warrants. Other times doctors simply prescribe a complete lifestyle change and a healthy diet. In order to control diabetes, we must control our blood sugar levels. Therefore, we must try as best we can to eat at the same time every day and eat the same amount of carbohydrates each day. During digestion carbohydrates, both good and bad, are converted to sugar. People with diabetes have problems controlling the amount of sugar in their blood. Having sugar levels that are too high or too low is very dangerous.

If you have been recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, you should talk to your doctor or nutritionist to help you make out menus for each week. Planning ahead is crucial for the diabetic. You can’t expect to eat correctly unless you have the right foods in the house and know exactly what you are going to eat at any certain time. Meals and snacks must be planned beforehand.

Carbohydrates should count for at least half of a diabetic’s diet. That doesn’t mean that you can eat fries all day and say you are following your diet. Eating healthy carbs is the key. Your carbs should come from whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes and low fat dairy products. Eating foods in their healthiest form is also very crucial. You should eat raw vegetables or salads. Of course, you must be very careful with your salad dressing. Check it for bad fats or sugar. Another great way to cook vegetables is steaming.

Whole grains are very important. Read the labels of the cereal or bread you buy to make sure you are truly getting whole wheat and whole grains. Many cereals and breads try to sound healthy with whole grains, but you should read the ingredients to see if whole grains are listed and where they fall in the list. The first few ingredients are always the most important ingredients. Don’t be fooled; read the label.

Many older people have seasoned their foods with butter or margarine. Try good for you oils like olive oil. Another idea is to learn to eat the vegetables with spices or herbs that add no calories or fat.

Managing type 2 diabetes with a low carb diet is a great way to control your blood sugar. When you have created your new low carb menu plans, show them to your doctor or nutritionist. Eating the right way make seem strange at first but it can save your life.
